My goal with redesigning this course was to provide students with engaging activities and greater choice in how they will demonstrate their mastery. A backward design process, based on Universal Design for Learning, was used to develop the course. It is standards-based mastery learning with inquiry- and lab-based activities. Students must achieve scores of 75% or greater in each unit. It has been run in both teacher- and student-paced modes this year. The content was delivered using the Schoology platform. Each unit is divided into four to six learning objectives (LOs) and mini-lectures are used to guide instruction. Each learning objective had additional resources to scaffold learning and gives students greater freedom in how they would learn. Mastery could be demonstrated using both exam and performance-based assessments.
